Chippa score late to hold SuperSport

Chippa United scored a late equaliser to hold SuperSport United to a 2-2 draw in a 2020-21 DStv Premiership match at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Wednesday.

Goals from Bradley Grobler and Thamsanqa Gabuza set SuperSport on course for victory following Andile Mbenyane's opener but the Chilli Boys conjured a point in the pouring rain, courtesy of a Maloisane Mokhele goal with three minutes of regulation time remaining.

As a result, SuperSport remain in third spot on the league standings, five points adrift of Mamelodi Sundowns and Swallows FC while Chippa continue to occupy 14th place but move a point clear of those tied at the bottom of the league standings.

SuperSport threatened early and were only denied the opener by the woodwork with two minutes on the clock. Teboho Mokoena's cross deflected off Mduduzi Sibeko and had Ayanda Mtshali beaten but not the post, with Frederic Nsabiyumva duly on hand to clear the rebound from danger.

Mtshali was called into action six minutes later to deny Gamphani Lungu's acrobatic effort from bulging the back of the net and having weathered the early storm, Chippa hit SuperSport with a sucker punch in the 38th minute.

Ronwen Williams pulled off a top save to deny Mokhele from close range but could do nothing to stop Mbenyane who pounced on the loose ball on his return to the starting eleven, as Chippa took a narrow lead into the half-time break.

SuperSport provided the perfect response and levelled matters four minutes after the interval. Sipho Mbule picked out Grobler who sent a looping header over the Chippa goalkeeper for his eighth goal in as many games this season.

Gabuza then latched onto a Jamie Webber corner-kick in the 83rd minute of the match to give SuperSport a deserved lead but the Chilli Boys hit back through Mokhele, who powered the ball home from close range four minutes later.

Matsatsantsa conjured further chances through Grobler and Mokoena in the dying embers of the game but Chippa held on to claim a valuable point on their travels.
