Kaizer Chiefs were held to a 1-1 draw by SuperSport United in an Absa Premiership match at the FNB Stadium on Saturday night.

The draw saw Amakhosi climb to the top of the league standings, while Matsatsantsa moved up to the seventh spot on the log.

Chiefs threatened first through Samir Nurkovic, who was sent through on goal, but his first touch took him too wide of goal and SuperSport goalkeeper Ronwen Williams denied him.

However, the Serbian striker did break the deadlock in the 15th minute following a good move involving Lebogang Manyama.

The South Africa international set-up Nurkovic, who burst into the box before firing home with a deflected effort to make it 1-0 to Chiefs.

Matsatsantsa tried to respond with a goal, but Grant Kekana's header came back off the upright and the hosts cleared their lines just before the half-hour mark.

Chiefs then stood firm at the back and they were leading 1-0 at the interval.

The visitors pushed for the equalising goal after the restart and Bradley Grobler forced Chiefs keeper Daniel Akpeyi into a decent save with a header.

The hosts continued to attack as Billiat and Siphosakhe Ntiya-Ntiya were both denied by Bafana Bafana shot-stopper Williams, before Nurkovic's effort grazed the outside of the right-hand upright.

However, Chiefs went to sleep in the closing stages of the match and they were punished by Grobler, who came into the match having netted three goals in his last two competitive games.

Evans Rusike played a beautiful pass to Grobler and the latter beat Nigeria international Akpeyi to make it 1-1 with seven minutes left on the clock.

Matsatsantsa had a chance to win in the final minute of injury time when they won a penalty for a handball. Grobler stepped up but Akpeyi guessed right and made the save to give Chiefs a share of the points.

The momentum was with the visitors and they were awarded a late penalty, but Akpeyi made a great save to deny Grobler from the spot-kick to ensure that the game ended in a 1-1 stalemate.
