Q and A with former SSU captain Thabo September

SuperSport United website conducted Q and A with the club’s Ambassador and former captain Thabo September regarding his role in the team after hanging up his boots a few seasons ago.

September has been actively involved within the club structure as well as in the SuperSport Television production.

The First Team:

How was your experience working with the technical team this past season? It must have been an exciting one I feel!

My experience with the First Team as a technical team member has been great, I feel this past season I’ve grown and learnt so much from Coach Kaitano Tembo and the rest of the team.

How was the reception when you joined the guys and how was the feedback from the players?

The reception from the players was top class, I expected nothing but professionalism from all the boys. Having played with some of the players, it was easy for them to talk to me so I can pass their feelings to the head coach. The relationship that they have with the coach is amazing and I came to add on that.

What was your specific role on a weekly basis as far as the training session is concerned?

My role at the First Team is to assist the head coach with setting up for a session, communicate the coaches’ instructions to the players and learning from the head coach for my development in coaching.

Having served the team for seasons as a player and captain and now as a technical staff member how does it feel?

It feels good to be part of the team on the field again. Coaching is definitely not as easy as playing but I’m learning faster.

You played with a few players currently in the team, but you you have worked mostly with captain Ronwen Williams, how is your relationship as you are now in a different capacity?

I played with a couple of players in my days Boalefa Pule, Clayton Daniels, Grant Kekana, Bongani Khumalo but Ronwen Williams is the one I’ve worked with longer and I am so happy for him and his family. Last season he was rewarded by being named the captain and I will assist him in any way I can, we have the best relationship.

Also, you have reunited with Bafana Sihlali (Physiotherapist), Patrick Molepo, Joe Boshielo (Kit managers) and Coach Andre Arendse etc. That should have been a great feeling?

That’s the thing about this club, it looks after its own people. So in the technical team I have everyone that I worked with when I was still playing. Coach Kaitano, Andre, Bro Joe, Bro Bafana, Kobus De Wet and Grant Johnson they are all still around. The culture of the team will never be lost.

The MultiChoice Diski Challenge (MDC):

Tell us about your role at the MDC?

I do commentary for SuperSport Television channel and now am busy with the SuperSport United Football Club MultiChoice Diski Challenge (MDC) team as a coach.

How is the standard of play in the MDC as opposed to the First Team setup?

Listen the standard of play in the MDC Reserve League and First Team are not far from each other. Good example will be the players that we promoted from the MDC team, they are already making their mark in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) in short space of time.

The technical team brought few academy prospects into the First Team, this is an indication that the coaches at the Academy are doing a good job. What is your take on that one?

The MDC coaches at the club are doing an excellent job and they deserve to be praised for the talent they produced and the Academy coaches as well.
