SSU advance to Nedbank Cup Last 16 after Rayners late strike

SuperSport United are through to the Nedbank Cup Last 16 stage after beating hosts Maritzburg United 1-O on Wednesday night.

The Nedbank Cup Last 32 encounter was held at the Harry Gwala Stadium in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal province.

The visitors launched an attack inside 1O minutes as forward Iqraam Rayners’ header narrowly missed the target after receiving a pin-point delivery from Gamphani Lungu.

The partnership between Rayners and Lungu saw Matsatsantsa creating numerous scoring opportunities as the former was denied by Maritzburg goalkeeper after another splendid delivery from Lungu.

The combination of the Matsatsantsa pair continued to trouble the Maritzburg defence as Rayners whipped a superb delivery across the face of goals but Lungu mistimed to tap in.

In the 28th minute skipper Ronwen Williams pulled a brilliant safe from Claasen’s well anticipated shot after midfielder Jesse Donn gave away possession.

The halftime score was O-O at halftime.

Two minutes into the second half Macheke rounded off Luke Fleurs and managed to lay a beautiful pass to Theron who shot wide due to lack of composure.

Defender Fleurs was on top of his game as he picked up an injury in the 63rd minute but managed to recover as the match resumed a minute later.

In the 74th minute Williams pulled another clever safe with his right foot from Friday Samu’s effort after beating Matsatsantsa’s defence.

With just five mibutes remaining, coach Kaitano Tembo brought in Kudakwashe Mahachi for Selaelo Rasebotja.

In the 88th minute Matsatsantsa broke the deadlock as substitute Mahachi released a beautiful delivery to Rayners who netted superbly with his right foot.

The final score was 1-O to SuperSport United as veteran Onismor Bhasera deservedly won man of the match award.
