SSU, AmaZulu share the spoils

SuperSport United and AmaZulu played to a goalless draw in their midweek DStv Premiership encounter on Tuesday night.

The match was held at the Jonsson Kings Park Stadium in Durban.

The two sides created a few chances with the home side’s Makhehleni Makhaula’s long range effort went wide in the 11th minute.

Subsequently, Matsatsantsa threatened for the lead as prospect Jesse Donn and forward Iqraam Rayners’ combination set up Kudakwashe Mahachi whose effort went straight into the AmaZulu goalkeeper’s hands Veli Mothwa.

In the 26th minute the home side nearly claimed the lead through ex-United winger Thabo Qalinge as his close range effort was tipped over the post by the United goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.

Matsatsantsa got a great opportunity as Iqraam Rayners was denied one-on-one by AmaZulu’s Mothwa after making a clever run.

The halftime score was 0-0.

At the beginning of the second half SuperSport made their first substitution as Thami Gabuza came off the bench for Zimbabwean international Kudakwashe Mahachi.

The big centre-back’s presence made some visible changes to the visiting side as they started pushing forward in search for a goal.

Two minutes into the second half Thatayaone Ditlhokwe was cautioned after a wrongful challenge to the AmaZulu player.

The visitors initiated some brilliant built up in search of a goal.

In the 53rd minute Grobler’s shot went wide after Gabuza laid a brilliant pass to the Matsatsantsa forward.

The home side conceded a set-piece as Teboho Mokoena fired at goal from a free-kick that hit the AmaZulu wall.

In the 74th minute Tercious Malepe saw red for a rough tackle on SuperSport midfielder Jamie Webber.

In the 77th minute United continued to increase the pressure with some superb moves after AmaZulu were reduced to one man down.

In the 83rd minute Coach Kaitano Tembo brought in the DRC international Guily Manziba on for Webber.

In the 85th minute Rayners missed a scoring chance in front of goals after receiving a brilliant delivery from Nhlapo on the right and his effort went wide.

Young centre-back Luke Fleurs received marching orders (89th) after receiving a second bookable offence as the referee added four minutes after regulation time.

Coach Tembo made his final tactical replacement as Grobler made way for new signing Buhle Mkhwanazi.

The match ended goalless as both sides finished with 10 man apiece after Malepe and Fleurs received marching orders respectively.

Prospect Donn won man of the match award.
