SuperSport United beat Cape Town City 3-2 in their last match of the year 2021 in their midweek DStv Premiership match in Tshwane.
The match was held at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville.
Matsatsantsa opened the scoring account through Gamphani Lungu inside 10 minutes after receiving a long clearance at the back from veteran Onismor Bhasera.
Matsatsantsa kept on pushing as they increased the lead in the 27st minute from a brilliant freekick by Teboho Mokoena.
The score was 2-0.
In 32nd minute big centre-back Thamsanqa Gabuza Gabuza picked up an injury and had to be replaced.
A minute later Bhasera cleared a dangerous diagonal cross from the left for a cornerkick.
Four minutes later the Zimbabwean international Kudakwashe Mahachi came off the bench for the injured Gabuza.
The halftime score was 2-0 to the home side.
In the 47th minute Bhasera brought down former Matsatsantsa Development Academy forward Khanyisa Mayo into the box and referee Victor Gomes pointed to the spot.
Another former United player Fagrie Lakay smashed it in to make the score 2-1.
City started showing some sense of urgency as they kept on pushing for an equalizer.
In the 51st minute United won a freekick after Lungu was brought down just outside the box.
Mokoena raised his hand again to take the set-piece but this time around City keeper Hugo Marques pulled a brilliant save.
In the 55th minute Thabo Nodada was red carded after getting a second bookable offence as City were reduced to 10-man.
The visitors made double substitution in the 63rd minute as Relebogile Mokhuoane made way for Mduduzi Mdantsane while former SuperSport utility player Thato Mokeke replaced the young Mayo.
Five minutes later the home side also made some changes as Siyabonga Nhlapo replaced Ugandan international midfielder Moses Ndhondhi.
In the 70th minute Kuda Mahachi was stretchered off as he picked up an injury.
The young Sibusiso Maziko came off the bench for Mahachi.
As the match progressed, United were under some tremendous pressure after City’s substitutions changed complexion of the game and that led to defender Kegan Johannes scoring an own goal in the 73rd minute after poor communication between him and keeper Ronwen Williams who started after recovering from sickness.
The score was 2-2 to both sides.
In the 80th minute Johannes brilliantly scored a cracker to put Matsatsantsa back in the lead.
The score was 3-2 to hosts SuperSport United.
In the 90+ minute Maziko, who replaced Mahachi, was brought down and won a freekick as he was chasing a long clearance from the back.
Jamie Webber stood up and took a well anticipated freekick but got tipped over the post by keeper Maques.
The final score was 3-2 to the home side.
