SSU unseat Cape Town City on second spot after home win

SuperSport United beat Cape Town City 1-0 in a DStv Premiership encounter in Tshwane on Friday night.

The game was held at the TUT Stadium.

The match started in a fast pace as the home side created scoring opportunities but City’s defence was up to the task.

Nigerian international Etiosa Ighodaro fired just wide of the right post with a shot on the turn in the 12th minute.

It was United again who came back strongly as City conceded a corner-kick in the 20th minute but Ronald Pfumbidzai’s header went near post after a brilliant delivery by Grant Margeman.

In the 31st minute Matsatsantsa were unlucky as Ighodaro’s effort was denied by the frame of goal.

In the 32nd minute the hardworking midfielder Siphesihle Ndlovu got cautioned after he wrongfully tackled City’s player.

With four minutes remaining before end of the first half, Ricardo Goss pulled a clever save from Tshegofatso Nyama’s effort.

The halftime score was 0-0.

United continued where they left off as Margeman’s long range effort went near post after receiving a brilliant delivery from Gamphani Lungu.

In the 59th minute prospect Shandre Campbell made way for new signing Lyle Lakay who marked his return to United.

Matsatsantsa’s prayers were finally answered when City’s keeper Keet saved Margeman’s initial shot inside the box and Ighodaro kept his composure and slotted home the rebound.

The score was 1-0 to the home side.

Keet was called into action again after denying Lakay’s well-taken set-piece after Lungu was wrongfully tackled.

Goss pulled off three saves within a space of three minutes to prevent Taahir Goedeman and Khanyisa Mayo from equalizing.

In the 75th minute Darwin Gonzalez’s effort hit the upright in what looked like to be an equalizer.

In the 83rd goalscorer Ighodaro made way for young Keenan Bezuidenhout as talented defender Luke Fleurs replaced Terrence Dzvukamanja who picked up an injury.

The final score was 1-0 to SuperSport as they maintained their unbeaten run to the new campaign and leapfrogged City into second place.
