Swallows deny SuperSport in Gauteng derby

Swallows FC fought back to deny SuperSport United a victory as the two Gauteng clubs drew 2-2 in a DStv Premiership clash at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville on Friday night.

The draw saw Amaswaiswai remain in the relegation/relegation playoff spot (15th) league standings, but they are now two points behind 14th-placed TS Galaxy.

On the other end, Matsatsantsa also remained eighth on the log - two points above ninth-placed Lamontville Golden Arrows.

Matsatsantsa started the match brightly and they deservedly broke the deadlock through Kegan Johannes just eight minutes into the game after Amaswaiswai had failed to clear away a free-kick.

Jamie Webber delivered a well-taken free-kick which Wandisile Letlabika failed to clear and Johannes was there to volley the ball home to hand SuperSport a 1-0 lead.

SuperSport should have been 2-0 up after Thamsanqa Gabuza was sent through on goal, but the experienced marksman hit the upright with only goalkeeper Jody February to beat.

The score was 1-0 to SuperSport at the interval with Swallows having threatened once in the first half as Dillon Solomons hit the side-netting with a fierce shot.

Swallows were the better side after the restart and they managed to level matters through Ruzaigh Gamildien to make it 1-1 in the 50th minute after a defensive mix up in the hosts' box.

Amaswaiswai then pushed forward in numbers as they looked to take the lead for the first time and keeper Boalefa Pule came out to deny Monnapule Saleng from close range.

However, the hosts looked dangerous on the counterattack and they did restore their lead when Iqraam Rayners turned home Gamphani Lungu's cross to make it 2-1 to SuperSport in the 70th minute.

Coach Dylan Kerr then introduced Kagiso Malinga who was adjudged to have been fouled by Selaelo Rasebotja in the SuperSport box and Swallows were awarded a late penalty.

Solomons stepped up and made no mistake from the spot-kick as he sent Pule the wrong way to make it 2-2 in stoppage time, and the match ended in a stalemate.

SUPERSPORT (1) 2 (Johannes 8', Rayners 70')

SWALLOWS (0) 2 (Gamildien 50', Solomons 90'+2)
