SuperSport United became only the eighth club in Premier Soccer League history to finish the season unbeaten at home, something not even record-breaking champions Mamelodi Sundowns could achieve this term.

SuperSport, who were forced to move from their home at Atteridgeville last month after the PSL found the stadium below standards, completed their 15-match home programme on Saturday with a 1-0 win over Kaizer Chiefs at the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace.

Before that, they beat both TS Galaxy and AmaZulu at the Tshwane University of Technology Stadium.

They won 10 and drew five of their home league matches this season with a goal tally of 23 for and eight against for a total haul of 35 points out of a possible 45 from their home games.

Their achievement contrast starkly with the fact they did lose at home in the Nedbank Cup, eliminated in the first round at the hands of amateurs Dondol Stars in a rare win for a third-tier side against PSL.

The achievement of completing a season without a home league defeat has been achieved previously by Umtata Bucks (1997/98), Chiefs (2004/05, 2012/13 and 2016/17), Ajax Cape Town (2007/08), Orlando Pirates (2011/12) and Swallows in 2020-21 – the season when they broke the record for the greatest number of draws in a single campaign.

Pirates had the best home return with 11 wins and four draws for a 37-point haul, with SuperSport’s achievement not far behind.

This elite list, surprisingly, does not include Sundowns, who lost at home to TS Galaxy this season and in the last campaign lost their unbeaten home record in their last home game when Stellenbosch stunned them 3-0.
